Abstract

Nowadays, we meet microsystems in a variety of devices used in modern life. They are used, for example, in medicine, biology, industry, home appliances, transport, and aerospace. One of the main problems in the technological development of microsystems is their actuation. Several solutions have been suggested, such as electrostatic, electrothermal, electromagnetic, or piezoelectric actuation, although a valid solution seems to be still out of our reach. Another crucial problem in designing, manufacturing, and operating microsystems for micromanipulation consists in the loss of some basic paradigms commonly used as a source of inspiration at the macroscale. The differences in designing at the two different scales may have either positive or negative effects. For example, an unthinkable structure in the day–life domain, as, for example, a long “cantilever” bridge over the Hudson river, would become possible after downscaling “everything” from road dimensions to the micro-world. Alternatively, a fantastic electric motor that works very well in our world, by virtue of the basic principles of electromagnetism, would become useless if scaled back to the micro cosmos. This book opens a small window on the world of research, presenting a group of papers that try to respond to the challenge of increasing the efficiency and functionality of modern microsystems. A final little section is also dedicated to the development of new teaching methods successfully adopted in some university courses.

Abstract

Many ophthalmologists are in the transition from the traditional cataract surgery technique to the new minimally incision cataract surgery (MICS) technique. They are in the need of updated information on how to make this transition smoothly. In this book, world-renowned opinion leaders present up-to-date information on the new and fast-developing trends in cataract surgery. It reflects the state of the art of microincisional cataract surgery with the concept of minimizing incision. It offers all necessary information on the new technology as well as on the surgical technique. Further, it demonstrates how to handle difficult cataract cases as well as new intraocular lenses.

Abstract

Microsurgery for Fertility Specialists is an invaluable resource for physicians who specialize in the surgical treatment of male and female infertility. This practical text explains the basics of microsurgery and provides detailed operative descriptions of surgical procedures such as vasectomy reversal, sperm retrieval, tubal reanastomosis, and penile surgery.  An exceptional cadre of reproductive specialists shares valuable knowledge of the current state of microsurgery, its role in infertility procedures, and the latest advances in the field --including some non-infertility microsurgical techniques.  The book is an essential educational guide for those with a more advanced knowledge of microsurgical practice as it includes chapters that will help them mentor residents and fellows, and inspire future generations of reproductive surgeons.

Abstract

This atlas illustrates the anatomical structures of the internal and external cranial base and their topography essential to transnasal endoscopic surgical approaches.Currently, the majority of transnasal microsurgical interventions are largely restricted to hypophyseal interventions. The petrous part of the temporal bone and the retrosellar median area have only been cautiously approached using microsurgical endoscopy due to a current lack of technical experience and topographical knowledge. These approaches are common in the US, though, where they are already successfully conducted which cal

Abstract

The purpose of this book is to define the basis of telemicrosurgery, a new discipline at the border of robotics and microsurgery. After the history of robotics and microsurgery, the robots and their instrumentation will be described. The chapters will explain the training in telemicrosurgery and then propose some experimental paradigms. The first clinical applications for various specialties will be explored. In closing, potential future applications will be discussed.

Abstract

Raising of Microvascular Flaps provides all those who deal with microsurgical tissue transfer, i.e. plastic surgeons, ENT surgeons, trauma surgeons, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons, with all they need to know in their daily practice. In this second edition, the authors have followed the principle of systematic teaching based on photographs of cadaver preparations alongside explanatory color drawings to enhance understanding of the anatomy. Since microvascular tissue transfer is continuously developing, three flaps from the new generation have been added. These perforator flaps expand the spectrum of reconstructive possibilities and have specific indications if very low donor site morbidity is important to patients. A special strength of the book is its clear didactic structure. The highly instructive text is comprehensive and precise and also covers all representative literature on flap raising.

Abstract

The optical trapping of colloidal matter is an unequalled field of  technology for enabling precise handling of particles on microscopic scales, solely by the force of light. Although the basic concept of optical tweezers, which are based on a single laser beam, has matured and found a vast number of exciting applications, in particular in the life sciences, there are strong demands for more sophisticated approaches. This thesis gives an introductory overview of existing optical micromanipulation techniques and reviews the state-of-the-art of the emerging field of structured light fields and their applications in optical trapping, micromanipulation, and organisation. The author presents established, and introduces novel concepts for the holographic and non-holographic shaping of a light field. A special emphasis of the work is the demonstration of advanced applications of the thus created structured light fields in optical micromanipulation, utilising various geometries and unconventional light propagation properties. While most of the concepts developed are demonstrated with artificial microscopic reference particles, the work concludes with a comprehensive demonstration of optical control and alignment of bacterial cells, and hierarchical supramolecular organisation utilising dedicated nanocontainer particles.
